Sheep feet in winter

Blog

Sheep feet can suffer in the winter due to wet weather, which can lead to foot infections, worms, and flies. Here are some tips for keeping sheep feet healthy during the winter:

  • Provide hard standing
When sheep are housed, provide hard standing so their feet can dry out and muck can be released from between their hoofs.
  • Regular foot bathing
Regularly bathe sheep’s feet to remove compacted straw that can cause abrasions.
  • Regular hoof trimming
Trim sheep’s hooves regularly, at least 1-2 times a year, depending on their growth, nutrition, and environment.
  • Inspect feet
Regularly inspect sheep’s feet, and examine the first lame sheep in a group immediately or within three days.
  • Treat infected feet
Treat infected feet, and isolate infected ewes to reduce the risk of spreading infection.
  • Seek veterinary advice
If footrot is a major cause of lameness, or if normal treatments are unsuccessful, seek veterinary advice.
